چکیده

We compare the capacity CZF of an idealized zero-forcing decision-feedback equalization (ZF-DFE) system to the capacity C of the underlying Gaussian-noise channel. We find that, for strictly bandlimited channels, the capacity penalty gets vanishingly small as the signal power increases. For non-strictly bandlimited channels, on the other hand, the capacity difference C − CZF grows without bound as the signal power increases, and the asymptotic ratio CZF ⁄ C is as low as 93.6% for some channels. We conclude that ZF-DFE on non-strictly bandlimited channels is a suboptimal, information-lossy equalization technique, even in the limit of infinite signal power.

A comparison of interference rejection and multiuser detection

We investigate the use of an antenna array at the receiver in FDMA/TDMA systems, to let several users share one communication channel within a cell. A decision feedback equalizer which simultaneously detects all incoming signals (multiuser detection) is compared to a set of decision feedback equalizers, each detecting one signal and rejecting the remaining as interference. We also introduce the...

Realizable MIMO decision feedback equalizers

A general MMSE decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for multiple input-multiple output channels is presented. It is derived under the constraint of realizability, requiring finite smoothing lag and causal filters both in the forward and feedback link. The proposed DFE, which provides an optimal structure as well as optimal filter degrees, is obtained as an explicit solution in terms of the channel...

An Information-Theoretic Derivation of the MMSE Decision-Feedback Equalizer

We consider the discrete-time Gaussian channel with inter-symbol interference (ISI). Under the assumption of perfect feedback, an information-theoretic derivation of the minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) is presented. Whereas previous works have used information theory to analyze the zero-forcing and MMSE DFE structures, this work derives the MMSE DFE directly ...

On Prefiltering for Reduced–State Equalization of MIMO Channels

In this paper, we consider prefiltering for reduced–state equalization of frequency–selective multiple–input multiple–output (MIMO) channels. We introduce the minimum– and maximum–phase equivalent MIMO system transfer functions, respectively, and show their relation to zero–forcing decision–feedback equalization (ZF–DFE). Furthermore, energy concentration properties of the minimum– and maximum–...

Coding and equalization for PPM on wireless infrared channels

We analyze the performance of trellis-coded pulseposition modulation with block decision-feedback equalization (BDFE) and parallel decision-feedback decoding (PDFD) on indoor, wireless infrared channels. We show that the reduced complexities of BDFE and PDFD as compared to maximum-likelihood sequence detection allow for better codes whose increased coding gain more than compensates for the pena...
